THE FIELD GUIDE
Connect the starting word to the target by changing one letter at a time. Every step must make a real word. Here is how to build your first ladder and improve your next one.
Select a letter in the current word and type its replacement, or enter the whole four-letter word. Keep the other three positions unchanged and press Enter to submit.
Every step must appear in our common English word list. Names, abbreviations, and invented words are not accepted. You cannot repeat a word already in your ladder.
Both endpoints are visible from the start. The shortest-path number is the fewest moves possible in our word list. Aim to match it, or explore a longer route. Each new puzzle can have a different target.
A LITTLE WALKTHROUGH
Change L to R: COLD becomes CORD. Then change O to A to make CARD, C to W to make WARD, and D to M to reach WARM. The word stays four letters long, and each move changes exactly one position.
5 words. 4 moves. The starting word does not count as a move.
WHEN THE PATH GETS TWISTY
Try working backward from the target: which words can reach it in one move? Common endings such as -OLD, -ARD, and -ARE can connect families of words. A useful step may temporarily move away from the target, so do not judge a route only by matching letters. Undo lets you try another branch; a hint can help from your current word.

A word ladder shows both the start and the target. You build a chain of valid words to connect them. It does not ask you to guess a hidden word, and there is no six-guess limit or color-coded feedback about a secret answer.
Use exactly four English letters, change exactly one letter from the current word, and choose a word in our dictionary. A word already in your current ladder is also rejected. Invalid attempts do not add a move. Dictionaries vary between games, so a word accepted elsewhere may not work here.
No. Undo removes the last accepted move so you can try another route. Your move count follows the ladder currently on screen. Hints are optional; revealing the full solution ends that puzzle without recording a win.

The daily puzzle refreshes at 00:00 UTC. Everyone on this site gets the same start and target for that UTC date. Unlimited practice is available on the home page whenever you want another ladder.
Not always. Word Ladder Daily uses its own puzzle schedule and curated dictionary. Another game may accept different words or choose different endpoints. Our solver and hints are guaranteed only within our own word list.
